Kerr Plans to Make it Big at Elsik – 1st Tournament of a New Speech Year!

31 Aug

KERR_PREP-Top_02 (2)After placing 1st in Sweeps at one of Houston’s first big tournaments of the year, Kerr’s Speech Team hopes to go for a three-peat at Elsik High School with a relatively young crew. This year’s travel team is starting with only two seniors and over half of the team incoming freshmen, many of whom began preparation in our Alief Speech and Debate Camp at Kerr this August.

We are proud of our young team’s gumption and can’t wait to get a great start on the 2009-10 season this upcoming Friday and Saturday. All permissions, fees, and emergency forms are due to Coach Davis today and IE’ers are staying after school with Coach Harrison and Funmi on Tuesday. All competitors should check out the practice schedule your captain, Nick, has put together for everyone. He has posted it on the green board in the speech room.

24 Aug

capital state champsKerr was proud of its two UIL State Chapions from the 2009 season, and so was the Alief School Board. On Tuesday evening, the Alief School Board recognized Kerr graduate, Joshua Tang, for  his taking first in Informative Extemp at State, and for Sonney Nguyen’s 1st place ranking in Current Events and Issues.  Both Kerr students were also invited to the Governor’s mansion this summer for recognition of their achievements.

Joshua Tang recieved a full scholarship to Ashland University in Ohio, and Sonney Nguyen has begun school at Rice University, so their coach, Derek Davis accepted the thanks for these two outstanding young men. Coach Davis commented that, “in five years of coaching UIL Speech and Academics, these two young men are some of the finest I have ever worked with and deserve this recognition. We expect great things from them in the future.”

Note: Under Coach Davis, Kerr’s Current Events & Issues Teams and individuals have competed at UIL State every year

for the last five years, and he has coached extemporaneous speakers to UIL State for the last three years, including Aimee Tangu who was the Bronze medalist in 2007.  Sonny & Joshua were Kerr’s second and third Kerr Champions and were Coach Davis’s first. Andrea Negri was Kerr’s first UIL State Champion in 2004.
