Alief School Recognizes Kerr’s Two UIL State Champions

24 Aug

capital state champsKerr was proud of its two UIL State Chapions from the 2009 season, and so was the Alief School Board. On Tuesday evening, the Alief School Board recognized Kerr graduate, Joshua Tang, for  his taking first in Informative Extemp at State, and for Sonney Nguyen’s 1st place ranking in Current Events and Issues.  Both Kerr students were also invited to the Governor’s mansion this summer for recognition of their achievements.

Joshua Tang recieved a full scholarship to Ashland University in Ohio, and Sonney Nguyen has begun school at Rice University, so their coach, Derek Davis accepted the thanks for these two outstanding young men. Coach Davis commented that, “in five years of coaching UIL Speech and Academics, these two young men are some of the finest I have ever worked with and deserve this recognition. We expect great things from them in the future.”

Note: Under Coach Davis, Kerr’s Current Events & Issues Teams and individuals have competed at UIL State every year

for the last five years, and he has coached extemporaneous speakers to UIL State for the last three years, including Aimee Tangu who was the Bronze medalist in 2007.  Sonny & Joshua were Kerr’s second and third Kerr Champions and were Coach Davis’s first. Andrea Negri was Kerr’s first UIL State Champion in 2004.

Kerr Global Debate Winners Meet at United Nations to Confront Climate Change

16 Jul

Green Team ParkThe People Speak, an initiative of the United Nations Foundation, is holding its innovative and educational Youth Leadership Summit in New York, with events continuing through Saturday. Today, Kerr representatives, along with students and teachers from schools across the nation and internationally spent the day at the United Nations.

Participants learned about the purpose and role of the United Nations and issues about climate change. Tomorrow, students will be involved in 350 activities to educate about energy and climate issues, and then all will perform service projects and go on a closing banquet cruise this Saturday.

The summit is focused on climate change and actions individuals can take to reduce emissions in their own communities. Convened in partnership with the National Forensic League and IDEA, the summit is featuring presentations and hands-on activities for high school students and educators, including access to UN officials and skill-building workshops. Nearly 200 high school students and educators from international countries are learning about how the United Nations addresses the many facets of climate change and how they can do their part at home. The schools represented are the winners of the Global Debates, an international debate competition focused on raising awareness about the urgent need to address climate change.

Alief Kerr won their chance to attend the workshop for the first time this year because of the support of the BP A+ for Energy grant project and its year long activities in The People Speaks program to educate about energy issues and climate change. The Kerr team made public service announcements that they posted on YouTube.com. They produced essays, wrote letters to elected officials, created this website and contributed blogs, hosted public debates in October of 2008 and this past Spring 2009, and composed songs and videogames – all focused on these important energy issues.

Kerr students will be planning activities for energy education as a result of this conference and will post many of their activities and reports on this blog.

ShielaJLBP Energy has extended their support for the Green Team for an additional year as Coach Davis was honored with a $10,000 Sustainability grant entitled, “Growing the Green Debate Team.”  We will continue to focus on sustaining education and opportunities to change the world in regards to energy issues and climate change.

Ainee Athar, former Vice-President, was one of the final speakers at the reception for winning teachers  at a ceremony hosted by BP Energy honoring all ‘A+ for Energy’ grant winners at the Westlake Club.

Portions of the grant will help Kerr Debate move to less paper use, as most debaters will use grant provided laptops to collect evidence. They will also produce PSA’s and update our very own climate website, TheGreenDebateTeam@wordpress.com.
